Naji’s story takes place in the city of Tehran in the country of Iran which is on the continent of Asia. The region is usually referred to as the Middle East. Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest continuous major civilizations, with settlements dating back to 7000 BC. The first Iranian dynasty formed during the Elamite kingdom in 2800 BC. Iran is the eighteenth largest country in the world. Iran’s neighbors are Azerbaijan and Armenia to the north-west; the Caspian Sea (the largest lake in the world) to the north; Turkmenistan to the north-east; Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east; Turkey and Iraq to the west; and finally the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south. The official language of Iran is Farsi (or sometimes called Persian.)
